AFM Glas Medium

AFM Glas Medium

AFM® (Activated Filter Media) is a high-performance filter medium made from recycled glass, engineered to replace traditional sand in pool and water filtration systems. Unlike ordinary crushed glass, AFM® undergoes a patented activation process that transforms the glass surface, giving it unique catalytic and self-sterilizing properties. The result is superior filtration efficiency, longer filter life, and significant savings in water, energy, and chemical consumption.

Why AFM® is Better Than Traditional Glass Media

Many filters today use standard crushed glass as a replacement for sand. While this may look similar to AFM®, there are critical differences:

  • Activated Surface vs. Smooth Glass
AFM® is chemically activated to create a negatively charged, highly hydrophilic surface. This attracts and traps even the smallest organic particles. Standard glass remains smooth and hydrophobic, allowing dirt and bacteria to slip through.

  • Bio-Resistance
The activation process makes AFM® self-sterilizing, preventing the formation of biofilm (a slimy bacterial layer that often grows in traditional sand or glass filters). In contrast, biofilm builds up quickly on standard glass, reducing filtration efficiency and increasing chlorine demand.

  • Filtration Performance
AFM® filters particles down to 1 micron, while standard sand filters about 20–30 microns and unactivated glass only slightly better. This means visibly clearer water and removal of even microscopic impurities.

  • Efficiency & Cost Savings
AFM® requires less backwashing, saving up to 50% water compared to sand or traditional glass. Because there’s no biofilm build-up, chlorine consumption is reduced by up to 30%.

  • Lifespan
AFM® lasts indefinitely without performance loss. Standard glass, just like sand, gradually compacts, clumps, and needs replacing every few years.
